Choosing Bathroom Storage for Your Space
A bathroom cabinet needs to fit both the room and the way you use it. Start by deciding what you want to store, then compare the space available with the cabinet's confirmed assembled dimensions. An attractive photo or a description such as “slim” is not enough to establish a fit.
Compare four storage layouts
| Cabinet style | Space it uses | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Over-toilet | Space above and around the toilet | Tank height, space to lift the lid, access to the flush control and water valve, and the cabinet's lower opening. |
| Tall freestanding | A floor footprint with storage above it | Assembled width, depth and height, the room's walking route, and space for cupboard doors to open. |
| Wall mirror cabinet | Wall space for a mirror and storage | Wall suitability, mounting requirements, cabinet depth, and door movement near lights, switches or other fixtures. |
| Slim cabinet | A narrower storage position | The actual width and depth. A narrow body still needs room for open doors and access to its contents. |
Measure the usable space
Write down the available width, depth and height, then note anything that reduces that space: skirting boards, pipes, a towel rail, a door handle or a sloping ceiling. Measure at the cabinet's intended position rather than assuming the whole wall has the same clearance.
For an over-toilet unit, check the toilet and tank separately. Leave a way to lift the tank lid and reach controls or plumbing. For any cabinet with doors, consider the space needed while those doors are open, not just when the cabinet is closed.
Freestanding describes a layout; it does not settle the assembly or anchoring requirements. For wall storage, confirm the mounting requirements for the intended wall. Ask about these details before choosing if the listing does not explain them.
Match the storage to your routine
List the items you plan to keep inside and compare their sizes with the usable shelf space. Tall bottles need different clearance from folded washcloths. Adjustable shelving can provide layout choices, but the available positions and shelf dimensions still matter. A cupboard count alone does not tell you how much will fit.
These examples illustrate the four layouts:
- White over-toilet cabinet: a freestanding design with adjustable shelves.
- Black tall cabinet: shelves and two cupboards in a freestanding layout.
- White wall mirror cabinet: a wall-mounted design with three shelves.
- White slim cabinet: a tall, narrow design with four shutter doors and adjustable shelves.
Confirm missing details before buying
If exact dimensions are missing, ask for the assembled width, depth and height, plus the openings or clearances relevant to your room. A package size or variant code is not necessarily an assembled cabinet measurement. Do not estimate fit from a photograph or convert an unexplained number into a specification.
